Dentists are precise and logical people, but that doesn’t mean they’re immune to falsehoods. In fact, many dentists believe things that simply aren’t true, and these limiting beliefs are holding you back from the practice you’ve dreamt of! You may not realize that you’ve fallen victim to limiting beliefs, but if you feel like you should have everything figured out by now, feel like you are carrying the weight of the practice on your shoulders, or feel like you’re always busy but never productive, it’s time to break free from those limitations!
There are countless ways we allow our beliefs to hold us back, but these are three of the biggest ones:
“If I work harder, everything will get better.”
Hard work is important, but on its own, hard work doesn’t solve your business’ problems—it only makes you more exhausted. Instead of doing more things, do like Kirk says and “work smarter, not harder,” by focusing on the right things:
- Establish your Vision for the practice
- Make a plan for achieving your Vision
- Create systems to make your practice more efficient
You don’t want to be the bottleneck in your own success, so use delegation and automation to maximize what your practice can accomplish.
“I’m the only one who truly cares about this practice.”
Sometimes it may feel like you’re the only one who cares, but that’s because the team doesn’t care at the same level as you. However, they certainly care about the practice, and with more effective leadership, they’ll be inspired to buy in:
- Establish your Core Values and Purpose
- Provide clear roles
- Create measurable goals
If you want your team to engage with the practice, they need to feel like they’re part of something bigger than themselves.
“I can’t make more money unless I keep growing.”
It may seem like more patients, providers, and chairs mean more money, but that’s not the case. True profitability comes from being strategic:
- Differentiate your practice
- Keep more of what you produce by reducing your insurance dependency
If you focus on growth over strategy, you’re going to find yourself overwhelmed and spinning your wheels with nothing to show for your effort.
Ultimately, the stories you tell yourself shape your reality. When those stories are wrong, it holds you back, drains your energy, and prevents you from building the practice and life you really want. When you accept truth over falsehood, however, it’s the first step on the path to a Better Practice and a Better Life!
