3 Words To Simplify Your Life

It always seems to happen when I’m driving a carload of kids to the soccer field.

The phone rings.
“Can you help with the scouting event?”
“The book fair?”
“The neighborhood garage sale?”

While it’s great to give back, help others, even serve as commander of the weekend soccer shuttle…it eventually becomes unmanageable.

Saying “yes” can make you crazy, but the word “no” hits people like a slap in the face! Often we find ourselves hesitant to answer either way.

A great solution is the simple phrase, “Love to, can’t.”

Those three words honor the request, while being very clear about the boundary.

Next time you wrestle with one of those inquiries, ask yourself, “Am I truly doing this in the service of others, or at the expense of myself?”
When you’re acting at the expense of yourself, you’re helping nobody!

What Makes A Master?

If you’re ever in Kansas City and you get tired of barbecue, there’s a FANTASTIC hole in the wall Mexican place you have to try.

It’s called Dos De Oros, and owner Miguel Cervantez is what you might call a “master.” Aside from his expertise in preparation, ingredients and authenticity, there’s one more part of Miguel’s culinary know-how that makes him a master of Mexican cuisine. It’s his insistence that he is NOT, in fact, a master. Get to know him and you’ll see (and taste!) that Miguel’s skill comes from his unending dedication to being a student.

His carnitas are probably the best in town, but that didn’t stop Miguel from traveling to Mexico to learn how to make them just a little better.

So maintain your curiosity, and never stop learning. With that dedication, you’ll find others will recognize you as a master.

The Secret To Better Compensation


What’s the secret to better compensation?

Bringing more value to whatever you do.

Great athletes or performers provide the perfect example. Take Aaron Rodgers or Mick Jagger. Those guys command top dollar because their value tops the charts. Jagger sells a lot of records, Rodgers wins a lot of ballgames. And between them, they fill a lot of seats!

While we all can’t achieve rock star fame, we can look for ways to add value to our own contributions.

As a dental professional, for example, you might focus on keeping good patients in the schedule, or become an expert at fostering internal referrals.

Zig Ziglar put it best:

What Will You Do With Your Dash?

When you look at a grave marker, what’s the first thing you notice? The name? The age of the deceased?

There is often one tiny mark we overlook. And it’s the most important mark on the stone.

It’s the dash between the birth and death dates…the symbol that represents the entirety of that person’s life.

Regardless of when we are born and how long we live, we all get a dash.
Everything that defines who we are, what we accomplish and how we are remembered is contained in it.

What are you doing with yours? How does it affect your dental patient satisfaction?

The problem is a lot of us get caught up in the numbers. We tend to measure a life’s value by its length.

Stay On Target

Have you ever thought of your life as an ongoing game of target practice?

With all the parts you have to keep in order, the target concept is a great way of maintaining focus.

For me, productivity, family and health are at the center.

The cool part? You get to choose which of your daily activities are worth the most points!

Sometimes my focus strays. Instead of being productive, I get caught up in email, facebook, and distractions way outside the lines of my target. Those are the days I come home and wonder where time went, and why I just didn’t seem to accomplish much.

Take some time to think about what is most important to you. Now picture those points in the center of your target and take aim…that bullseye brings the biggest rewards!

Get Rolling With Momentum!

Establishing momentum is just like trying to roll a boulder (or in this case a minivan!!). It takes a lot of energy to get started, but once it’s rolling, it’s hard to stop.

Whether in business, sports or your practice, nothing creates confidence faster than gaining strong forward momentum.

When a basketball team goes on a big run, the opposing coach will always call a timeout to try to stop the momentum.

Fitness buffs discover that once they get into a workout routine, it’s hard to quit the urge to stay in shape. And that’s when great results happen!

Did you every read a great book, or see a movie that really inspired you? Part of the challenge is to keep that motivation once you’ve walked out of the theater.

The Key To Successful Connections

I discovered this after my first lecture in 2006…which happened to be my worst one ever. It was a total disaster!!

I found a great coach who agreed I needed help.

Her first step? A stone!

Written on the stone were the words, “IT’S NOT ABOUT ME.”

She put the stone in my hand and told me to carry it every time I spoke to an audience. It’s a subtle reminder that the key to connecting isn’t what I’m thinking or projecting on a screen, but identifying what’s in the hearts of those who are listening.

One trick is to remind yourself to be interested rather than interesting.

If you focus more on the what’s important to others , you will find you’re more able to make successful connections (and less likely to suffer a disaster like my first lecture!)

We recently came upon a dental practice that had overgrown landscaping, weeds and a lot of broken concrete around the lot. We realized there may be a lot of great people doing fantastic work inside, but the outer appearance may be turning away potential patients. Real estate experts will tell you home buyers often make a decision about a house within a matter of seconds. 63% of home buyers will show up at a house after liking an online photo. First impressions count!

Take a look at the cover of your practice, from the landscaping, to the logos, to the photos of your team. What first impressions are you creating? Make sure they are an accurate depiction of the great work you are doing every day!

The Most Valuable Thing You Can Sell

It’s funny how I can barely start my day without a big cup of Starbucks.

Is it the greatest coffee in the world? I don’t think so. But I love having that coffee in my hand at the start of the day. Makes me feel alert and ready to go.

Same thing with a bottle of spring water. It doesn’t taste any different than tap water, but it makes mefeel like I’m being healthier.

Even if I’m not very fast, a slick pair of Nike running shoes makes me feel like Usain Bolt.
